Values ~ 4
Through Honors 401: Exploring Personal Leadership Through Social Change, I was able to develop my group values and the successful strategies to work with others. Through the analysis of the 7 C's of the Social Change model, I found myself analyzing and focusing on a movement's sense of community and belonging. I acted on this value when volunteering as a home tutor to immigrant families through the Mankato YWCA Ready 2 Learn (R2L) program. Each week in my lessons I would ask my student about his weekly experiences with the community programs his parents had enrolled him and in return I would share how I may have had similar experiences to demonstrate how we had common ground to create a connection. I would also allow him to pick activities or books and ask for his parents' input on what he may need extra assistance with. My tendency towards planning and welcoming all ideas did not stumble when faced with an age gap of 15+ years. My value of building a community and collaboratively determining a path forward was enacted in my role as a home tutor (Level 4).
Throughout my undergraduate career I have sought to create a welcoming environment to group/team members in many roles. I would do this by asking for input from member that may have been talked over or posed open-ended questions to get feed back from all member to instill a sense that I value all opinions. In my first year, I saw it as wanting to create a place where I am valued or belong and in my advance experiences I have now weaved it into my leadership philosophy where I create that sense of belonging and community for the group members as well.
