Knowledge & Understanding (K&U) ~ Level 2
Communication (Comm) ~ Levels 1-2
Spanish classes at MSU allowed me to continue learning a language that would help me communicate with a larger group of people who hold a greater variety of perspectives with which to view the world. In this class, we learned about Spanish-speaking countries around the world as they were paired with each unit of study. We would look at the country's location, history, economic resources, and many others that allowed us to visualize how the citizens lived. An over-arching theme I found was that each country was affected in some way by their history just as any other student on campus is affected by their particular background (K&U Level 2). The differences from our past can shape our values and perspectives for many years.
While taking this class and learning the language where all instructions were given in Spanish, I related the experience to those that my students may have if they are not native speakers. While taking this class I valued repetition from the teacher and time for me to practice while receiving feedback (Comm Level 1). I would continuously try to translate every sentence in Spanish directly to my native language and at times this was impossible because the expression did not directly translate (Comm Level 2). I needed to adjust to thinking of the ideas I wanted to express to better communicate in Spanish.
