Self-Awareness (SA) ~ Levels 1-2
Knowledge & Understanding (K&U) ~ Level 1
In FYEX, we discussed and explored the meaning of culture. At the beginning of the year, I did not belive I had my own culture because of my common background from a rural town in Southern Minnesota. In the FYEX essay, I recognized that this community I belonged to for the majority of my life shaped my beliefs and how I continue to interact with others (SA Level1). We also were encouraged to attend cultural events on campus for this class. After attending a talent show showcasing culture, and the play The Miracle Worker, which tells the story of Hellen Keller’s caretaker Annie Sullivan, I was more aware of the multitude of students populations present on campus. If I felt like a fish out of water going from a town of 600 people to a small city of Mankato's size, then students who may be an entire ocean away from their home must feel like a fish in the desert (K&U Level 1). In the critical incident journals for the cultural events I attended, I describe how the play emphasized my privilege as a member as the hearing community and how the talent show allows many cultures to share their traditions with others to break down barriers, stereotypes, and misconceptions (SA Level 2).
