Information Synthesis ~ Level 3-4
After completing HIST 180 in my first semester at MSU where we explored content through research of primary sources and debates, I experienced the class a second time as a teaching aide for the interactive role-playing game I took part in. As I worked closely with Dr. Corely, the history professor of the class, he guided me through a project investigating social emotional learning (SEL) and how it could apply to my teaching style. I sought to investigate an approach to teaching math content in tandem with valuable life skills. SEL is a teaching style that includes teaching social skills and how to be emotionally aware of others while promoting growth in content knowledge. From multiple texts and perspectives on SEL as well as my observations in student growth through role-playing in the classroom, I highlighted specific aspects of SEL and how role-playing can promote these (Synthesis Level 3). As a future teacher, I plan to incorporate the goal of teaching students "responsible decision making" as defined by The Handbook of Social and Emotional Learning cited in the paper linked below. This project acknowledged that teaching these life skills can be done concurrently with any content and does not need to distract students from classroom content, but enhance student learning (Synthesis Level 4). I later revisited my findings regarding SEL in how I have incorporated the skills fostered in my own classroom as I complete my student teaching experience.
